ARMM to step-up efforts on tuberculosis control

MARAWI CITY, Lanao del Sur, Oct. 26 (PIA) -- The Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) government is set to intensify its efforts on tuberculosis (TB) control.

ARMM Governor Mujiv S. Hataman will soon ink the adoption of Executive Order (EO) 187, series of 2003, instituting the Comprehensive and Unified Policy (CUPS) for TB Control in the region.

TB ranked fifth among the ten leading causes of deaths in the ARMM. In 2010 alone, around 141 died from the disease.

“Sa kabuuan, mababa pa ang case detection sa ARMM, at maraming kaso pa ang dapat mapagtuunan lalo na sa mga malalayong lugar. Dapat paiigtingin pa ang pagpapalaganap ng kaalaman at angkop na mga materyales para tuluyang masugpo ang nakakahawang karamdamang ito,” (The case detection in ARMM is still low and there is a need to look into many cases particularly in far-flung areas. The dissemination of knowledge and appropriate materials should be further intensified to completely control this infectious disease) said Dr. Dolores Castillo of the TB-Linking Initiatives on Networking to Control Tuberculosis (TB-LINC).

The EO will be adopted to disseminate guidelines, procedures and standards of implementation, as well as, to facilitate compliance among local government units in improving the quality and extent of their TB control efforts.

The Health Reform Framework through the ARMM Health, Education, Livelihood, Peace and Governance, and Synergy (HELPS) program prioritizes responsive health system by improving health service access and delivery.

This is in line with the Millennium Development Goals and the Universal Health Care Agenda of the President.

The ARMM HELPS, a banner program of the Hataman administration, focuses on the major interventions that will be pursued by cluster agencies in health, education, livelihood, peace and governance. (BPI-ARMM/APB/PIA-10)

Muslims to celebrate Eidul Adha on October 26

MARAWI CITY, Lanao del Sur, Oct 23 (PIA) -- The entire Muslim community is set to celebrate Eidul Adha on Friday, October 26.

Eidul Adha or the Feast of Sacrifice, commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God.

It is one of the two greatest Islamic festivals. The other is Eidul Fitr which marks the end of Ramadhan, the Islamic holy month of fasting.

During the Eidul Adha celebration, Muslims will gather at their local mosques to listen to sermon and perform the Eidul Adha congregational prayers.

Those who can afford will also symbolically sacrifice or slaughter a domestic animal, such as cow or goat, and share the meat of the sacrifice to family, relatives, friends and others, especially the poor.

Muslims called this act as Qurbani.

Meanwhile, President Benigno Aquino III has declared October 26, 2012 as a regular holiday throughout the country in observance of Eidul Adha to bring the religious and cultural significance of the celebration to the fore of national consciousness.

ARMM Gov hails 'historic' agreement

MARAWI CITY, Lanao del Sur, Oct. 15 (PIA) -- Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao Governor Mujiv Hataman lauded the signing of the historic Framework Agreement between the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) today.

In a press statement, Hataman said the ARMM welcomed this development with utmost sense of support and cooperation.

He said the pact brings the decades-long negotiation close to achieving its final goal - a lasting peace for the coexisting peoples of Muslim Mindanao.

Hataman thanked those who had worked hand-in-hand into the long process, whether directly or indirectly from day one.

He also credited both the first and the current Aquino administration for the breakthrough in the government’s peace dealing with the MILF.

“On-and-off to some points of discord in more than two decades, President Benigno Simeon Aquino III broke gridlocks in the first face-to-face presidential talk with the MILF leadership in Tokyo, Japan on August 4, 2011,” he said.

“Again, this presidential move effectively followed the straight path to waging peace, yet a similarly crucial decision on the part of then President Corazon C. Aquino, when she met MNLF Chairman Nur Misuari, right in the heartland of the Moro conflict in Maimbung Sulu on September 5, 1986,” he added.

The ARMM Governor assured the public of a smooth transition to power in case parties would reach the summit of the peace negotiations.

Principally, both panels agreed to hold subsequent discussions on the essential issues on the security aspect (ceasefire), the rehabilitation and development of conflict-affected areas, and ancestral domain.

Hataman said the ARMM under him had worked extensively on the second point, while the other two points were left to the negotiators of the both panels to hammer out.

“Within the sphere of the region’s mandates, our administration of the autonomous region becomes the first of seven dispensations to have opened partnership to peace endeavor with the Civil Society which effectively crafts and gives substance to efforts in rehabilitating and developing conflict-affected areas in all its five provinces and one-city component,” he further said.

MARAWI CITY, Lanao del Sur, Oct 1 (PIA) -- The Department of Tourism (DOT) in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) conducted a forum last week to tackle multi-sectoral perspectives on how to advance the tourism industry in the region.

The discussions during the forum were premised on the “Path to Peace” with insights from security forces, legislators and tourism advocates in the ARMM.

DOT-ARMM Secretary Nassreena Sampaco-Baddiri said while sustainable community-based tourism generates economic benefits, partnership with the security sector is also a must, given that peace and tourism development works alongside.

For his part, Col. Daniel Lucero of the 103rd Infantry Brigade based in Kampo Ranao here, highlighted synergy as the key to converge everyone in achieving regional and national interest.

People and community-based planning with support from locals constitute an effective framework for a responsive tourism plan, he said.

Believing that tourism has rippling effect, Maguindanao First District Representative Bai Sandra Sema also avowed further tourism promotion of historical landmarks.

She also said to be a tourism champion, one has to believe on the tourism potentials of the region.

Assemblywoman Samira Gutoc-Tomawis, on the other hand, challenged participants to be proactive tourism advocates and urged them to access all possible measures to promote ARMM.

The tourism industry is the 21st century income earner and sustainable eco-tourism of the ARMM must be campaigned even in our daily routine, she said. (BPI-ARMM/PIA-10)
