Marawi gets set for observance of 6th liberation anniversary

The city here is prepping to commemorate its liberation from the five-month warfare caused by the Dawlah-inspired Maute group (DI-MG) in 2017.

On October 17 this year, everyone would look back on the triumph even if six years had passed.

To ensure that the occasion would be memorable, the Task Force Bangon Marawi (TFBM) held a coordination meeting on Thursday, October 5 to go through what needs to be in place and readied in advance.

Presidential Assistant for Marawi Rehabilitation (PAMR) Assistant Secretary (Asec) Felix Castro Jr. bared the initial flow of the commemoration, which would kick off with a wreath-laying at the Heroes Wall in Kampo Ranaw to honor the fallen soldiers, and then followed by a program to be held at the covered court in the city hall compound.

He further mentioned that part of the event would be the official turnover of completed projects, such as the Marawi Convention Center, Sarimanok Sports Stadium, five four-storey school buildings with 20 classrooms each, Marawi Museum, School of Living Traditions, Marawi Peace and Rizal Parks, historical landmarks, 19 barangay complexes in the most affected area (MAA), solid waste management (SWM) administration building with motorpool and overhauling area, powerhouse with standby generator set for SWM facility, central material recovery facility, sanitary landfill, agriculture food terminal, and torogan.

On the other hand, the City Schools Division of Marawi (CSDM) posted that they would lead a pyromusical fireworks display at 7:00 in the evening on October 23 at the Sarimanok Sports Stadium in Marawi City.

The activity would offer free admission to the public with the help of Japanese sponsor Kenji Mori.

Castro announced earlier that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. could not grace the commemoration program as he would be on official business travel to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Nonetheless, Special Assistant to President Antonio Lagdameo Jr. and Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity (OPAPRU) Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr. could spare some time to represent the country’s chief executive.

Additionally, Castro shared that they invited Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Benjamin Abalos Jr., Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary Gilbert Teodoro Jr., and Senators Robinhood Padilla, Ronald Dela Rosa and Francis Tolentino to come over.

He stressed that although they are still waiting for the confirmation of their guests, the preparations for the commemoration of the liberation should still be in full swing. (CRG/PIA-10/Lanao del Sur)
