RHRC conducts capabuild confab for women’s rights advocates in the Bangsamoro

MARAWI CITY, Lanao del Sur, Oct. 3 --- The Regional Human Rights Commission (RHRC) together with the Regional Commission on Bangsamoro Women (RCBW) in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) recently conducted a capacity building training for women’s rights advocates from its partner civil society organizations (CSOs).

The training was conducted from September 29 to October 1, 2014 at the Marco Polo Hotel, Davao City to further develop the competence of the advocates in working for women’s rights, and to ensure that they have the proper tools to effectively impart knowledge on gender empowerment to various communities in ARMM.

Seven CSOs in ARMM were represented during the capability building training.

Major topics discussed during the training include Magna Carta of Women and its IRR; Gender Ombud under the Magna Carta of Women; Women’s Rights in Islam; Women’s Participation in the Bangsamoro Development Plan; the Gender And Development (GAD) Code; and GAD Planning.

The activity was conducted in relation to the RHRC project entitled “Promoting the Rights and Enhancing the Participation of Women in the Bangsamoro Peace Consolidation and Development Process,” which is being supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

One strategic aspect of the project consists of empowering women, as claimholders, to participate in Bangsamoro governance and development planning processes.

The project will likewise support the continued engagement of partner CSOs with community women — the ones who bear the brunt of poverty and conflict the most.

The RHRC recognizes that knowledge on one’s rights is an important aspect of gender empowerment. (RHRC-ARMM/PIA-10)
