MARAWI CITY, Lanao del Sur (PIA) --To disseminate important climate information and forecasts, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) conducted a Provincial Climate Forum on La Niña for Soccsksargen and Bangsamoro region on Friday, November 11, via Zoom Meet.
Some 302 municipal agricultural officers, members of the disaster risk reduction and management offices, media, and representatives of the farmers and fisherfolk sector from the two regions participated in the forum.
Anthony Joseph Lucero, weather services chief of the Mindanao PAGASA Regional Services Division, said the forum was intended to make participants primarily understand weather, flood, and climate.
"It aims to communicate climate information and useful forecasts to various stakeholders which is useful in decision-making related to agriculture, water resource management, public health, and disaster risk reduction and management," he said.
Topics discussed during the forum include weather updates, hydrometeorological hazards, the climate of Soccsksargen and BARMM and its variability, climate review and outlook, and PAGASA products and services.
PAGASA Administrator Vicente Malano said they are also doing the forum to know the information needs of the people on the ground. "Para on our part makita din namin ano yung ang dapat naming gawin para magkaisa sa understanding [so that on our part, we can also see what we should do to be united in understanding]," he said.
The highlight of the forum was the presentation of El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon. Currently, PAGASA’s ENSO Alert System Status is at La Niña.
Based on the recent forecast, La Nina will likely continue in the coming months of the current year and may progress until early next year, with a transition to ENSO neutral conditions thereafter. This increases the likelihood of above-normal rainfall conditions that could lead to possible adverse impacts such as heavy rainfall, floods, and landslides over highly vulnerable areas.
