Several local government units (LGUs) in the province of Lanao del Sur have joined the ranks of disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM) champions in the country.
Provincial DRRM Officer Shaminoden Sambitory announced during the 4th quarter meeting of the Provincial DRRM Council, December 13, that eight (8) LGUs earned the 2023 Gawad KALASAG "Fully Compliant" seal.
These LGUs are Marawi City and the municipalities of Bubong, Butig, Buadipuso Buntong, Calanogas, Piagapo, Taraka, and Wao, comprising 20 percent of the total number of the component LGUs of the province.
Aside from these LGUs, the provincial government of Lanao del Sur was also cited as a Gawad KALASAG Fully Compliant awardee.
"We are thankful that we are one of those awardees. We had only three awardees last year - Bubong, Piagapo, and Wao, but this year it became eight," Sambitory proudly said.
With pride in this accolade, the PDRRMO head thanked every stakeholder and the PDRRMC member agencies for their efforts and determination to enhance DRRM operations in the province, benefitting the constituents of Lanao del Sur.
He said that receiving the country’s highest recognition on DRRM and humanitarian assistance resulted from the collective efforts of every stakeholder as well as the endeavors of PDRRMC members.
Moving forward, Sambitory assured that the provincial government would double its efforts to sustain the recognition and even achieve the 'beyond compliant" seal, the highest award in disaster resiliency.
He also hopes that more LGUs in Lanao del Sur will earn the Gawad Kalasag seal next year.
KALASAG stands for KAlamidad at Sakuna LAbanan, SAriling Galing ang Kaligtasan. The award aims to recognize the exceptional contributions of DRRM practitioners in implementing significant DRRM-related projects and activities and providing humanitarian response and assistance to affected communities.
