The Marawi Compensation Board (MCB) has already disbursed monetary compensation to 36 claimants who tragically lost loved ones during the 2017 Marawi siege.
According to a report released by the MCB, it distributed P8.05 million among 22 claimants, including one with two death claims, in the initial November 2023 payment round. In December 2023, it paid an additional P5.6 million to 14 claimants, two of whom had two death claims.
The MCB also disclosed that it currently awaits processing and payment for nine death claims totaling P3.15 million.
The compensation initiative operates under the legal provisions of Republic Act 11696, also known as the Marawi Siege Victims Compensation Act of 2022. The act establishes a vital framework for compensating individuals impacted by the Marawi siege, including those who lost family members. Under the act's provisions, each approved death claim merits P350,000 cash aid.
Expressing her gratitude, Litisia Palahang, a beneficiary from the initial disbursement, shared her acceptance of the loss of her son, who was among those affected by the tragic event in Marawi. She emphasized that the financial assistance received from the government served as a crucial lifeline, enabling her to embark on the journey of rebuilding her life.
The MCB, during a Special Committee Hearing of the Marawi City Council convened on January 31, 2024, reiterated its dedication to transparency in its operations. It also presented updates on claims applications to the Council. In response, the City Council committed to standing alongside the MCB in its mission to administer fair and timely compensation to all eligible claimants.
To date, the Board has processed 12,657 claims applications, including 147 death claims, 166 structural claims, 7,652 multiple claims, and 4,692 claims for other properties. (APB/PIA-10 Lanao del Sur)
