Binidayan, Lanao del Sur (2 September) -- Police authorities reported that a firefight erupted here between the government forces and a group of armed men around 1:30 PM yesterday causing public panic.
Police Superintendent Cosanie M. Derogongan, provincial police director, said the firefight took place at the public market in barangay Poblacion of this town.
He said the firefight ensued after Faizal, Isa, Abed and Asnawi, sons of Abdullah Alizaman, chairman of barangay Guiarong in Pagayawan town, arrived in the market and engaged in a heated argument with the government forces for violating Municipal Ordinance No. 01-2010 prohibiting the carrying of firearms within the premises of the town's public market and other public places.
According to the provincial police director, the firefight which lasted for about an hour resulted to the wounding of certain Jomar Gampong on his right foot and the recovery of three (3) XRM motorcycles bearing the plate numbers JA-3404, JG-3404 and OD-1042.
The wounded victim was brought to Binidayan Clinic for medical treatment while the recovered motorcycles are now in the custody of Binidayan Police Station for safekeeping, he added.
Derogongan said the government troops suffered no fatality while the casualty on the enemy's side was still undetermined.
He further disclosed that a crisis management committee, with the presence of the Provincial Council of Elders, was immediately convened to pacify the crisis and avoid the escalation of tension while the town's populace is still observing Ramadhan.
As of press time, Derogongan said the tensions have subsided.
