PNP conducts clean-up drive in Marawi City

MARAWI CITY, Lanao del Sur, March 3 (PIA) --- The local police force marched to Barangay Banggolo, this city, and conducted a clean-up drive along Gomisa Avenue, last March 1.

Instead of rifles and pistols, the men and women of the Philippine National Police (PNP) carried with them broomsticks as they set out for the clean-up operations.

They were in high spirits as they segregated and disposed waste materials that clogged the street and removed receptacles containing stagnant waters which are possible breeding grounds of the dengue virus-carrying mosquitoes.

The campaign is part of their police community relations program in support for the peace and order situation of the entire province, P/SSupt. Rodolfo Asejo Llorca, PNP Provincial Director, said.

Llorca, who just assumed his post, recently, said aside from enforcing the Philippine Government law, he also plans to enforce other types of laws in the province such as the traditional law, the Shariah law and the peace and development law.

The newly-installed provincial PNP chief emphasized that the cleanliness drive is part of the peace and development law.

“We will start with the cleanliness drive which is doable by us and we will talk to everybody, go block to block and house to house until such time that the local residents realize the importance of cleanliness to peace and development,” he said.

He also said that if possible, they will conduct a one-day general clean-up drive where all the residents in the city will be required to participate.

Llorca, further, disclosed that he plans to talk with the local government units here for a consultative meet with traditional and religious leaders, prominent families in the area, academe, representatives from the MNLF and MILF and all stakeholders to declare Marawi as a neutral city.

“My vision is to make this city the ideal and model Islamic City in the Philippines and if we can correct the peace and order problems here then it will be a big help to the attainment of that vision and to the Maranao people as a whole,” he added.

The clean up drive was a collaborative undertaking of the Lanao del Sur Provincial PNP Office, Marawi City Police Office, Philippine Army, Bureau of Fire and Protection (BFP)-Marawi City and Alpha Phi Omega. (Apipa Bagumbaran/PIA-10 Marawi)
