MARAWI CITY, Lanao del Sur --The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) through the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB)-10 guaranteed that the new sanitary landfill lying in Brgy. Malimono in Marawi City and Brgy. Kasayanan in the municipality of Kapai in the province of Lanao del Sur will operate soon.

DENR-10 Clearance and Permitting Division Legal Section Attorney and Solid Waste Management focal Abbas Lao said they target to open the facility in the last week of April this year.

Such was affirmed by the Task Force Bangon Marawi (TFBM) Chairperson Secretary Eduardo Del Rosario as he stated that this is a significant initiative under the rehabilitation effort.

"We were told by the contractor and DENR authorities that this will be operational by the end of April. This is a very big and laudable project," he said.

Del Rosario also assured that the sanitary landfill will be safe, free from health hazards, and environment friendly because of the technology applied to put it up successfully.

As per the computation of the DENR, the landfill which amounted to almost P300 million will last for about 25 to 40 years depending on the volume of the wastes that will be sent.

Lao further said that among the infrastructures constructed in the area are nine cells where wastes will be compacted, hazardous cell, guardhouse, administrative building, cafeteria, dormitory, weighbridge, motor pool and wash bay, powerhouse, and segregation, leachate, and composting facilities.

City Mayor Majul Gandamra conveyed that after this project is operationalized, the current dumpsite in Brgy. Papandayan in the city will be closed and rehabilitated into an eco-park.

The new sanitary landfill can accommodate not only the wastes from the city but also neighboring places.

"Ito ang magiging central sanitary landfill at pwede rin ma-cater dito ang nearby municipalities na wala pang sanitary landfill, subject to agreement with kung sino ang gustong mag-utilize [This will be the central facility and nearby municipalities which do not have sanitary landfill can also be catered here, subject to agreement with those who want to utilize]. We are open for that," said Gandamra. (CRG/PIA-Lanao del Sur)
