MARAWI CITY, Lanao del Sur -- Participants of the Start-up 101 workshop spearheaded by the Department of Information and Communications Technology - Mindanao Cluster 3 (DICT MC3) were urged to create and use their ideas to help their community.

Jason Occidental, one of the resource speakers of the workshop, said that start-ups can create a significant impact in Lanao del Sur as they will provide jobs and employment especially that the world is now shifting to a digital age.

“Ang daming [There are so many] new technology available and we need to keep up to that. With the launching of new forms of businesses, it will give more opportunities not only for new entrepreneurs but also those who are seeking employment opportunities,” said Occidental.

Occidental, who is also the director of Ateneo de Davao University’s Innovation and Technology Support, said start-ups will help in the economic development of the locality.

He also urged the participants to learn, engage and think of ideas that will not only help them earn profit but to help in the development of their communities.

“Try to think of new ideas not only to create profit but also to develop your own respective communities. Iyan talaga ang punto ng [That is the goal of] start-up. It’s really for local economic development,” he said.

Meanwhile, Hamdan Guro discussed market validation by identifying perfect segment customers and targets. According to him, start-ups will help Marawi City recover from the siege.

Guro, who is also a former trainee of DICT, urged the participants to be serious with their ideas and academic studies.

“Kapag gumagawa ng thesis make sure na iseryoso niyo. We don't know maybe yan ang magiging daan niyo sa pagkakaroon ng magandang business” he said.

[If you are doing your thesis, be serious about it. We don’t know that could be your way in having a good business.]

Start-up 101 is one of the activities of DICT under its Digital Startup Development and Acceleration Program (DSDAP) that aims to establish a strong Philippine Start-up Ecosystem by providing support that will enrich and strengthen the competitive advantage of Filipino start-ups.
