Gov't rallies Piagapo village folks' support vs. extremism

PIAGAPO, Lanao del Sur--Officials of the municipal government here, the Philippine Army, and the Philippine National Police called on village chiefs and their constituents to cooperate and never compromise the peace and security in their villages.

Piagapo town deputy mayor for Islamic Affairs Aleem Mustapha Panganting made the call during a community outreach program in Kalungunan, one of the remote villages of the municipality where barangay officials and traditional leaders, as well as chairpersons of nearby villages, attended.

Mustapha encouraged them to work together with the government in forwarding peace which is also the ultimate principle of Islam. Their cooperation, he said, can be conveyed by supporting government programs and projects.

[Let us work together to have peace and tranquility here. Let us support government programs because like Islam, these government programs also aim for peace.]

Police Captain Sherwin Destora backed Mustapha's call adding that government programs are intended to improve the lives of the people. He also urged barangay officials to encourage their constituents not to support those who are causing trouble in the barangay.

For his part, Major Napoly Cariazo, executive officer of the 12 CMO Battalion, pointed out the lessons learned from the Marawi City siege.

We know what happened in Marawi, I hope it won't happen again. Let us no longer take care of and provide a refuge to terrorists who destroy our environment, our lives, and our properties.]

He emphasized that one of the ways to avert extremism and terrorism is through collaboration between the civilian populace and the security forces.

Meanwhile, 51st Infantry Battalion commander LtCol. Fernando Payapaya asked for the community’s support by providing crucial information involving threats to peace.

[Do not let those people who are not authorized to bring guns or weapons enter here.  Reject them and report them to us and we will take action to get them out of here. Stop supporting the false ideology that they are promoting to you.] (APB/PIA Lanao del Sur)
