IOM urges training beneficiaries to pass on skills

MARAWI CITY, Lanao del Sur —The International Organization for Migration (IOM) called on internally displaced persons (IDPs) who benefited from its livelihood support intervention to impart their knowledge and skills on dressmaking to their children and fellow IDPs.

Michael Dumamba, IOM Marawi satellite office head, made the call during the graduation ceremony and starter kits handover to the 27 beneficiaries of its dressmaking livelihood assistance.

These women were among the more than 100 IDPs assisted by IOM through the livelihood component of its ‘Driving Marawi’s Rehabilitation through IDP Support, Community Development and Peaceful Transitional Action’ project which aims to improve the socio-economic condition of target communities.

“Ang habol ni IOM ay lahat ng inyong natutunan sa skills training whether dressmaking man siya, cookery, bread and pastry, o carpentry, lahat ng ating mga technical na natutunan ay kailangan natin ipasa sa ating mga kapwa mamamyan ng Marawi. Kaya malaking bagay na ang inyong natutunan ay maipasa niyo sa inyong kapwa IDP, taga Marawi, at sa inyong pamilya,” he said.

[IOM hopes that everything you have learned in skills training whether it is dressmaking, cookery, bread and pastry, or carpentry, all the technicalities you have learned you need to pass on to your fellow citizens of Marawi. So it would be great if you can pass on what you have learned to your fellow IDPs, Marawi people, and your family.]

Dumamba said the project recognizes the ability of its beneficiaries as agents of change and as partners of the IOM in facilitating the rehabilitation of the city.

Aside from improving the socio-economic situation of persons and communities affected by the Marawi conflict, the project is also anchored on two other pillars - strengthening inclusive local governance and enabling access to social cohesion and psychosocial support.

The project is implemented in partnership with the Korea International Cooperation Agency Philippines. (APB/PIA-10 Lanao del Sur)
