Marawi City buckles down to address traffic congestion

MARAWI CITY, Lanao del Sur (PIA)---The city government of Marawi and its partner stakeholders are buckling down to ease traffic concerns and enhance the safety and security of motorists, pedestrians, and traffic enforcers, alike.

Strategies were laid out in a joint meeting of three local councils and three local boards to lower traffic volume and address the traffic congestion in the city.

These include the installation of traffic lights in the main thoroughfares outside the most affected area of the city and strengthening the enforcement of local resolutions and ordinances.

To protect traffic enforcers, members of the councils also recommended the use of body-worn cameras among road enforcers and no contact apprehension.

The Marawi Traffic Management Group (MTMG) also underscored the need for the presence of the Land Transportation Office from the Bangsamoro region since the MTMG has limited powers to apprehend traffic violators.

Mayor Majul Gandamra who presided over the joint meeting emphasized the cooperation of the residents remains the biggest challenge in addressing the worsening traffic congestion in the city.

He called for public cooperation in following traffic rules and regulations that greatly impacts traffic flow and management in Marawi.

The said joint meeting held Monday, June 20, for the City Peace and Order Council, City Anti-Drugs Abuse Council, City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, Local School Board, Local Health Board, and People's Law Enforcement Board was spearheaded by the city government every quarter to keep its members abreast of the prevailing conditions, issues, and concerns affecting the city's peace, security, and development.
