MARAWI CITY, Lanao del Sur (PIA)--Seeing the drastic need to hear and gather the voices of the entire people of the city with regards to the payment of siege victims, the local government unit here spearheaded a public consultation Monday, October 10, to tackle the salient points of Marawi Siege Victims Compensation Act of 2022 and the proposal to stir the formulation of its Implementing Rules and Regulations (IRR).
Mayor Majul Gandamra stated that they invited traditional and religious leaders, civil society, educators, lawyers, and the chairs of barangays in the most affected area (MAA) to effectively consolidate the responses and stand of the city as a whole to encourage the national government to enforce the provisions of the aforementioned act.
“Tayo ay umaasa na maimplementa agad itong batas na ito nang sa ganoon ay mapakinabangan agad ng ating mga kababayan dito sa Marawi City, especially ang ating mga kababayang naapektuhan ng Marawi siege,” he said.
[We are hoping that this law will be implemented immediately so that this will be benefitted by our fellowmen in Marawi City, especially those who were affected by the Marawi siege.]
Gandamra stressed that through this effort, there may finally be an appointment of the members of the Marawi Compensation Board in the soonest possible time which he believed would address the plight and needs of his constituents, particularly how to justly compensate the lives or properties lost during the darkest part of their history.
He underscored that the public consultation signified that now is the time for them to be prepared for the matters that they would want to lobby as a local government in pursuing the compensation act.
Gandamra fervently desired that all the recommendations, sentiments and opinions raised would serve in the best interest of his constituents.
“Ang ating local government of Marawi City ay gumagawa ng mga hakbang nang sa ganoon ay matulungan natin ang ating national government na mapabilis ang pagtulong sa ating mga kababayan dito,” he said

Following the public consultation, Gandamra bared that the matters tackled would be noted for the effective drafting of a legal document to be submitted to the national government for their consideration.
As such, the city government here likewise encouraged various sectors to submit their concept papers containing their insights and recommendations for the creation of the IRR of the compensation law.
