MARAWI CITY, Lanao del Sur--Some 250 displaced families officialy received their permanent house and lot from the National Housng Authority (NHA) and Rebuilding Marawi Project of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) in Pamayandeg Ranao Residences at Dansalan in Barangay Mipantao-Gadongan, October 15.

“Tuloy-tuloy ang ating pag award ng permament housing units para sa ating mga kababayan na displaced sa most affected area (We will continue to award permanent housing units for our Filipinos who are displaced in the most affected area),” said Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD) Secretary and Task Force Bangon Marawi (TFBM) Chairperson Eduardo Del Rosario.

Despite the coronavirus (COVID)-19 pandemic disrupting usual operations to mitigate the spread of the contagion, the NHA and UN-Habitat in cooperation with its public and private stakeholders pursued to continue the construction of the housing units as they bolstered minimum public health safety protocols to ensure the protection of its workers.

From the 250 permanent shelters turned over, 100 were built by the NHA through the funding of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management – Marawi Recovery, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Program (NDRRM-MRRP) while 150 were built by the UN-Habitat’s Rebuilding Marawi through Community-Driven Shelter and Livelihood Project with funding from the Government of Japan amounting to $10-million.

According to Japanese Ambassador to the Republic of the Philippines Koshikawa Kazuhiko, they have been steadily making progress despite the significant challenges posed by the global health crisis as they were able to turn over 429 houses so far.

“Our work in Marawi is not yet finished. We will continue to strive to build more houses for displaced families, together with Japan's steadfast support for the Mindanao Peace Process, Mindanao will gain lasting peace and stability for the benefit of everyone,” Koshikawa added.

On her part, Najma Atip Daromimbang, President of the Lumbaca Madaya Eternity Homeowners Association warmly thanked the NHA, UN-Habitat, the government of Japan, and other stakeholders for their assistance in rebuilding their lives again.

“In behalf of all the homeowners from different associations who are now living and who will live in these permanent shelters, we are extending our thanks for all the help, hard work, and times you have given and shared with us,” she said. (VPSB/PIA Lanao del Sur)
