MARAWI CITY, Lanao del Sur (PIA)--The Philippine and Japan governments provided 250 more permanent shelters to displaced families living in the three to six-meter easement of Lake Lanao and Agus River inside the City’s most affected area.
Of the 250 housing units turned over, 150 of these were built in Pamayandeg sa Ranaw Residences at Dansalan (PRRD) Phase 1 and 2 in Barangay Kilala with funds from the government and people of Japan. The 100 units were built in PRRD Phase 3 and 4 in Barangay Mipantao Gadongan with funds from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management – Marawi Recovery, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Program of the Philippine government.
The Japan government partnered with the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) to build the shelters through the Rebuilding Marawi through Community-Driven Shelter and Livelihood Support Project.
“I am pleased to announce that Japan, in collaboration with UN-Habitat, provided 150 houses to displaced families in Barangay Kilala. These families will now be able to rebuild lives with what they can once again call home,” Japan Ambassador to the Philippines Kazuhiko Koshikawa virtually said during the culmination program of Kapananadem or Remembering the Marawi Liberation from the terrorist influence.
On the other hand, the National Housing Authority (NHA), which co-heads the subcommittee on housing of Task Force Bangon Marawi built the houses, acquired and developed the land used.
“We are constructing 1,500 permanent shelters. Tatapusin natin iyan [We will complete that] towards the end of the term of President Mayor Duterte. By December we will have an initial award of some 500 of the 1,500. Hopefully, we will be able to achieve the target of 100% in June 2022,” said NHA General Manager Marcelino P. Escalada Jr.
The house was designed by NHA with a lot area of 90 square meters and 46 sqm floor area. It has three bedrooms with living room, comfort room, and parking area. NHA also spearheaded the construction of community infrastructures in these shelters such as roads, drainage systems, electrical connections, water systems, and septic tanks.
A total of 2,857 units are targeted to be built. Of this, 1,500 will be built by NHA, 1,057 from UN-Habitat and 300 units from Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao. (LELA / PIA Lanao del Sur)
