MARAWI CITY, Lanao del Sur (PIA)--An official of the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) underscored on Monday, October 4, the importance of statistics in the response and recovery efforts of the government amid the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic.

In his message during the virtual kick-off of the 32nd National Statistics Month (NSM) in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), National Statistician and Civil Registrar General Usec. Dennis Mapa said statistics is vital in crafting effective policies and recovery strategies to cushion the socio-economic impact of the Covid-19.

"Our decision-makers also use statistics as a basis for the formulation of appropriate and effective policies and programs that can effectively mitigate the consequences brought about by the pandemic and can help stir the socio-economic recovery," he said.

Mapa further said that statistics has also been playing a significant role in imparting awareness and providing relevant information to the public. Through statistics, he said, the public can keep track of the number of positive cases per day, the active and recovered cases, as well as the prices of commodities during the health crisis.

The annual celebration of the NSM is pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 647 signed by then-President Corazon C. Aquino on September 20, 1990, declaring the month of October of every year as the National Statistics Month to promote, enhance, and instill awareness and appreciation on the importance and value of statistics to the different sectors of society.

It also seeks to elicit the cooperation and support of the public in upgrading the quality and standards of statistics in the country.

This year's celebration is anchored on the theme “NSM@32: Revving up for Economic and Social Recovery Through Evidence-Based Policies." (APB/PIA Lanao del Sur)
