MARAWI CITY, Lanao del Sur --Japan Ambassador to the Philippines Kazuhiko Koshikawa lauded the leadership of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte for his relentless efforts in rebuilding the City and in promoting peace in Mindanao.

“I’d like to express my deep admiration and respect for the outstanding leadership of President Duterte. He promoted Mindanao peace process as well as the reconstruction of Marawi,” Koshikawa virtually said during the culmination program of Kapananadem or Remembering the Marawi Liberation from the terrorist influence.

The Ambassador also shared the various support provided by the Japan government in rebuilding the Islamic City. He said that there has been a significant development made over the years to rebuild what has been lost.

To date, a total of 429 permanent housing units have been turned over to displaced families living in the danger zones or near Lake Lanao/ Agus River inside the City’s most affected area (MAA).

Moreover, the 18.97-kilometer Marawi Transcentral Road phases 1 and 2 have been completed with 2 billion yen or approximately P970 million fund from the Japan government through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Koshikawa also assured that Japan will continue supporting the peace process in Mindanao.

He also said that the Japan-Bangsamoro Initiative for Reconstruction and Development (JBIRD) program aims to provide an enabling environment for communities in Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.

“The Philippines is at its critical point deciding on extension of the Bangsamoro Transition Authority until 2025, rest assured, Japan will continue to fully support the Mindanao peace process as Mindanao is vital for peace and stability not just in the Philippines but also for entire regions,” he said.

The Japan government worked closely with the United Nations Human Settlements Programme and the Department of Public Works and Highways for the construction of permanent houses and transcentral roads, respectively. (LELA/ PIA Lanao del Sur)
