MARAWI CITY, Lanao del Sur (PIA)--The city government of Marawi marked its 82nd charter anniversary with various activities that attested to the resiliency and unity of its people amid many challenges, especially that of the 2017 Marawi siege and the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic.
Taking the spotlight during the celebration that started on August 4 and culminated on August 19 were different competitions ranging from sports, cultural, literary, and Islamic events.
The sports competition included autocross, golf tournament, duathlon. basketball, badminton, football, table tennis, lawn tennis, dart, chess, boat racing, and indigenous games, among others.
Adding color and meaning to the celebration were a live painting contest, cultural dance tilt, Qur'an reading, adhan recitation, and a concert.
Local talents, products, and government services also took center stage to show that all sectors in Marawi are working towards one goal - sustainable development.
'[The celebration is] for other people to appreciate our resilience, especially that despite of many challenges and difficulties we faced in the past, we still stand here united as a people and making the most of what is left of us," said city mayor Majul Gandamra.
He also emphasized that the activities were aimed at promoting Marawi as a safe city beaming with opportunities and full of potential.
"Little by little, we are successfully changing the old dangerous place into a more positive and inviting image," Gandamra further said.
The charter day culmination program meanwhile served as a venue for the city government to recognize and bestow Service Awards to its partner government agencies and the biggest business and real property tax contributors.
Marawi was chartered on August 19, 1940, when it was still called 'Danasalan'. The name Dansalan was officially changed to Marawi on June 16, 1956, but during the term of former President Ferdinand Marcos Sr., the name Marawi was changed to 'Islamic City of Marawi' to pay homage to the dominant Muslim population within the city.
