MARAWI CITY, Lanao del Sur (PIA)--Barely one week more before schools open, the City Schools Division of Marawi (CSDM) started its Brigada Eskwela to get all classrooms and schools ready for the back-to-school season.

The kick-off ceremony was held in Bito Elementary School where a gong was sounded to signal the start of the week-long repair, maintenance, and cleanup activities of public schools in preparation for the opening of classes on August 22.

City Schools Division Superintendent (SDS) Dr. Zenaida Unte-Alonto, who led the kickoff, said the Brigada Eskwela is one of the major flagship activities of the Department of Education (DepEd) which is now anchored on DepEd Order 34 s. 2022.

Also known as the National Schools’ Maintenance Week, the activity aims to bring together all education stakeholders to participate and contribute time, effort, and resources to ready public schools for the opening of the classes.

"Ito po ay [this is our] annual activity natin wherein all stakeholders, internal and external, convened and get together, we call it Bayanihan, to help our schools prepare for the influx of our learners this coming August 22," she said.

The CSDM expects around 24,000 learners in 51 schools under its helm including the temporary learning space in Brgy. Sagonsongan.

In support of the Brigada Eskwela, the city government of Marawi donated 100 pails, 100 dippers, 150 trash bins, 100 gallons with a faucet, 100 soft brooms, 100 broomsticks, 100 dustpans, 100 floor mops, and 70 Brigada Eskwela t-shirts. The provincial government, on the other hand, pledged P300,000 for the activity.

Aside from the repair and maintenance of schools, the Brigada Eskwela also includes a primary and booster vaccination rollout for teachers, learners, and community members.

Meanwhile, Alonto announced that CSDM will go to the grassroots to reach more schools, especially those located in geographically, isolated, and disadvantaged areas of the city to conduct the Brigada Eskwela so that the people in those communities can also feel the presence of the government and see 'what's going on.'
