1,680 candidates vie for Barangay, SK posts in Marawi

Islamic City of Marawi (19 October) -- A total of 1,680 candidates are contending for various positions in the coming October 25 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections here.
Based on the data gathered from the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) here, two hundred fifty-seven (257) are aspiring for the position of Barangay chairman while one hundred forty-one (141) are vying for the SK chairman posts.
On the other hand, a total 1,229 are eyeing the 672 slots for Barangay Kagawad while only 53 youth are running to get elected as SK Kagawad.
The data further showed that out of the 96 barangays, twenty-three (23) barangay chairmen seats and forty-six (46) SK chairmen seats remain uncontested.
City Election Officer Atty. Tommy M. Macadindang has earlier identified over 20 barangays as election watchlist areas because of history of failure of elections in the 2007 polls.
Meanwhile, Malacañang has urged candidates for the Barangay, SK polls not to resort to violence and other undesirable means just to be elected into office.
The Palace stressed that the coming elections should be clean and that the results should reflect the genuine sentiments of the voters.
