PNP reports violence in Lanao Sur as polls near


Islamic City of Marawi (14 October) -- The Philippine National Police (PNP) in Lanao del Sur has reported two (2) election-related violent incidents less than two (2) weeks before the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) polls.
Police Superintendent Cosanie M. Derogongan, PNP Provincial Director, disclosed during the provincial peace and order council (PPOC) meeting yesterday that violent incidents in relation to the forthcoming October 25 elections occurred in Molundo and Tamparan towns.
He said a shooting incident happened in Molundo around 1:00pm of October 3 while candidates where filing their certificates of candidacy.
The PNP, he added, immediately secured the area and no casualty was reported on that incident.
Derogongan however disclosed that three (3) persons were wounded during the shooting incident that transpired on October 12 at Tamparan.
He said a firefight ensued after a heated confrontation between contending candidates for Barangay chairman.
The police director further said that troops from the Philippine Army and 3rd Maneuver Platoon of the provincial PNP immediately proceeded to the town and secured the area.
The municipal police stations of the both towns are now conducting further investigation on the incidents, he added.
During the PPOC meeting, Derogongan likewise bared that bearers of one (1) M16 riffle and two (2) short firearms were apprehended in connection with the election gun ban.
He said the cases of violations were already referred before the City Prosecutor's Office.
