IRW’s Qurbani program banners ‘sacrificial’ faith in Islam

TAMPARAN, Lanao del Sur (PIA)--The international non-government organization Islamic Relief Worldwide (IRW)-Philippines has once again fostered the sacrificial faith in Islam as it pushed its Qurbani program.

Such an initiative is a seasonal program wherein cow meats are distributed to vulnerable communities during Eid’l Adha or the Feast of Sacrifice for Muslims.

“This is promoting the faith Islam. Although as an INGO, we do not promote religion but because we are faith-based, we provide support to religious activities, not only to Islam but also other religious activities,” said IRW-Philippine Area Programme Manager Sittie Jamairah Disomimba.

Disomimba said the act is historically relevant to an ancient Islamic story involving Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) who, out of his faith, was willing to sacrifice his son to God.

For this year, the organization prepared 3,000 kilos of cow meats to be distributed to at least 10,000 morits or learners of Islamic schools called madrasahs and torils which are situated in Marawi City, Iligan City, the towns of Lumbatan, Masiu, Tamparan, Lumba Bayabao, Taraka, Ditsaan-Ramain, and Tugaya in the provinces of Lanao del Sur,  and towns of Balo-i, Pantar, Sultan Naga Dimaporo in the province of Lanao del Norte.

Disomimba said that as the delivery of the effort was only limited to identified populations, they still look forward that in the next Qurbani, they could expand to accommodate more.

“We can only cater to a few. There are so many learners from madaris and torils, and sana [I hope] next time around, we can cater to others. We try to balance,” she said.

Apart from the Qurbani program, the IRW-Philippines likewise implements its Ramadan program wherein they target other communities who did not yet receive aid from them. (CRG/PIA-10/Lanao del Sur)
