MARAWI CITY, Lanao del Sur--The government of Australia has once again echoed its commitment to helping the war-destructed city to stand back on its feet.
During his fifth visit in the most affected area (MAA) Thursday, February 24, Australian Ambassador to the Philippines Steven Robinson shared that his country has already been contributing significant development and assistance to the reconstruction of the city and the healing of internally displaced persons (IDPs) ever since the occurrence of the siege in 2017.
He reiterated that his government will remain committed to assist people who were badly affected by the firefight as it is still evident until now that the full recovery of the place will still take a long time
“Australia will be here for the foreseeable future to support people. We are trying to support them with their livelihood and lifestyles. We are looking at how we can support the community in a very practical way,” said Robinson as he also came to visit Lake View Transitory Shelter in Brgy. Boganga to personally see the status of IDPs years after the siege and being aided by sponsors.
With the united efforts of some governments to ensure the restoration of normalcy to the city and the IDPs, the Ambassador conveyed positivity that the goal will be achieved, which is to witness the return of the people in their former places.
“I must say that since my last visit which was in August 2021, the significant change that has occurred down here is really quite surprising. There is so much construction going on here in the city and we are starting to see that people will be able to return to their houses,” said Robinson. (CRG/PIA-Lanao del Sur)
