MARAWI CITY, Lanao del Sur (PIA)--Amid the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic, the city dentist of Marawi City Health Office (CHO) reiterated the importance of good oral hygiene.
Dr. Samsida Gandamra said oral diseases continue to be a serious health problem in the country as the prevalence of dental caries on permanent teeth has generally remained above 90% throughout the year. Also, about 92% of Filipinos have tooth decay and 78% have gum disease or periodontal disease.
She said these diseases can be prevented if more attention is given to practicing good oral hygiene such as brushing teeth properly, using fluoride mouthwash from time to time, flossing once a day ideally before going to bed, and visiting a dentist regularly or every six months.
The lady dentist also stressed that being mindful of which foods to avoid and which to eat can contribute to good oral health.
She advised avoiding foods that are high in sugar and carbohydrates, extreme hot and cold beverages, and hard food, all of which do not contribute to building strong teeth. Smoking and intake of colored drinks, she added, can also stain the teeth.
Meanwhile, Gandamra assured that dental care services provided by the CHO are still available despite the pandemic but adjustments have to be made to ensure that the minimum public health standards are observed.
February of every year is observed as National Dental Health Month to strengthen public awareness on the importance of good oral health. This year's observation is anchored on the theme “Brushing is a must kahit naka-mask," (APB/PIA Lanao del Sur)
