MARAWI CITY, Lanao del Sur (PIA)--The city government of Marawi is celebrating this February National Dental Health Month with the attention focused on children.

With the theme “Brushing is a must kahit naka-mask,” the City Health Office (CHO) here alongside dentists pushed for interventions to promote maintenance of dental well-being for kids.

City Dentist Dr. Samsida Gandamra stressed that oral diseases continue to be a serious public health problem in the Philippines and the prevalence of this has generally remained throughout the years as about 92% of Filipinos were found to have tooth decay and 78% have developed into diseases.

She explained that although preventable, these diseases affect almost all Filipinos, especially children, at one point or another in their lifetime.

“We will be focusing our attention on children by giving topical application of fluoride and cavity varnish for most likely zero to 14 years old. We will be implementing oral health services and interventions,” said Gandamra in a celebration program Monday, February 21.

The city dentist further detailed that apart from the aforementioned supplies, they will also render services, including the distribution of toothbrushes, toothpaste, and orientation on the proper use of dental floss upon visiting public and private schools, daycare centers, and barangays of the city.

Additionally, the office intends to employ radio plugging for the promotion of oral health.

With the persisting coronavirus disease (COVID)-19 pandemic, Gandamra guaranteed that their dental services will continue despite the high risks they will have to undergo.

City Health Officer Dr. Ali Dalidig likewise assured that the local government will retain this as one of the top priorities as they believed that health comes from the mouth.

“Kailangan maganda ang ating mga ngipin at maganda ang ating digestion para maabsorb natin iyong full nutrients ng mga pagkain na kinakain natin [We need to have good teeth and digestion so that we can absorb the full nutrients of the food that we eat]. That is why, we are giving emphasis on the dental health of every Marawinian,” he said. (CRG/PIA-Lanao del Sur)
