MARAWI CITY, Lanao del Sur--A three-year project of international development and humanitarian organization Islamic Relief Philippines has assisted six barangay local government units (BLGUs) in Ditsaan-Ramain town craft their Disaster Risk Reduction Management (DRRM) Plan in a move to boost disaster resiliency of the vulnerable communities.

The project called "Sustaining Transformative and Resilient Initiatives in Vulnerable Communities (STRIVEC) in Ranao Philippines" seeks to strengthen the resilience of target communities to disasters and provide vital emergency aid when disasters occur.

Sittie Jamairah Disomimba, area programme manager of Islamic Relief Philippines, said the project has three components - education, livelihood, and DRRM assistance. She said the DRRM component aims to improve the DRR initiatives of the target municipality and its communities.

"This is being implemented in partnership with Kalimudan Foundation Inc. and the output of this is the updated DRRM plans of the six barangays as well as that of the municipal DRRM plan.  The six barangays were identified upon the recommendation of the municipal mayor and the municipal social welfare and development officer. Sila po ang nag identify sa anim and all of them actually are nasa gilid ng river [They identified the six and all of them are actually on the side of the river], Disomimba further said.

The program manager also recognized the urgency of the initiative and the importance of incorporating strategies to address gaps in disaster management at the local level.

"Because of the location of this place, they are prone to flooding mas kinailangan nila yung DRRM plan so that each one, not only the LGU, but each one of the households may kani-kaniyang tasking.  And it was identified in the plan through workshops," she said.

Hafzah Goldie Marohom, project coordinator of Kalimudan Foundation Inc., affirmed this saying capacity mapping and workshops were conducted to craft and update the local DRRM plans. She said the template used was from the Office of the Civil Defense (OCD) and the updated plan underwent scrutiny and review of the Department of Interior and Local Government and the OCD in Cotabato City.

The completed local DRRM plans of barangays Linamon, Barimbingan, Buadi Alao, Bagoaingud, Lumbatan, and Maindig were handed over Monday, February 14, to the respective punong barangays and witnessed by the municipal administrator and municipal DRRM officers.

"Salamat sa Islamic Relief at Kalimudan Foundation.Ilang beses na namin sinabi sa mga barangays na gumawa sila ng DRRM plan pero hanggang ngayon wala pa. Kung hindi pumasok si Islamic Relief at Kalimudan ay hindi talaga yun marealize. Dahil sa tulong nila, yung ibang barangay maeengganyo na gumawa ng DRRM plan," said MDRRM officer Muhaymin Salic.

[Thanks to Islamic Relief and Kalimudan Foundation. We have told the barangays several times that they have to craft DRRM plan but so far nothing has been done. If Islamic Relief and Kalimudan did not come in, that will not be realized. Because of their help, other barangays will be encouraged to make a DRRM plan.]
