Marawi Schools Division pushes for 10-day Ramadhan break

MARAWI CITY, Lanao del Sur--As the holy month of Ramadhan is again approaching, the Marawi City Schools Division (MCSD) is pushing for a local ordinance declaring a 10-day break during the last ten days of Ramadhan.

City Schools Division Superintendent Anna Zenaida Unte-Alonto said in a public consultation Friday, February 11, that the proposal aims to give the Division personnel, teachers, and learners the time to religiously observe the Laylatul Qadr.

Laylatul Qadr which takes place during the last ten days of Ramadhan is one of the most sacred nights in the Islamic calendar. It was believed to be the night in which the Qur'an was revealed to Prophet Muhammad and the night one's fate is decreed.

"What we wanted is to put it into law so that all our schools, both the private and the public schools, will have to observe the Laylatul Qadr, the most important ten days of Ramadhan, religiously and faithfully," she said.

The City Schools Division Superintendent also pointed out that, under the proposal, personnel and teachers in public and private schools including those at the Division Office would pay for the 10-day break thru an offset arrangement depending on the prerogative of the schools.

The said proposal will be lobbied by the MCSD through City Councilor Abdani Alonto who noted that the offsetting may only cover six days since the first and last two days of Ramadhan are usually declared as local holidays.

The Ramadhan break among members of the education sector in the city was previously observed during the term of former mayor Solitario Ali and former City Schools Division Superintendent Mona Macatanong. (APB/PIA Lanao del Sur)
