MARAWI CITY, Lanao del Sur--The local government of Marawi started Monday, February 21, the rollout of vaccination for children aged 5-11 years old in a bid to protect the youngest sectors of the community against coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).
The vaccination site was decked in festive and colorful decorations to entertain the kids. Vaccinated children also received loot bags filled with toys, balloons, and lunch packs as incentives for getting their much-needed protection against COVID-19.
Dr. Ali Dalidig, city health officer, said the young sector, both aged 5-11 years and 12-18 years, who are targeted to be vaccinated in the city is estimated to be around 20,000.
Those aged 5-11 years, he said, will be receiving a two-dose Pfizer vaccine specially formulated for young kids.
"Ni launch natin ito ngayon kasi we are hoping na magkakaroon tayo ng face-to-face classes at isa sa mga pre-requisites natin bago payagan ang mga eskwelahan ay dapat bakunado sila," he further said.
[We launched this today because we are hoping that we will have face-to-face classes and one of our pre-requisites before schools are allowed to hold such is that they should be vaccinated.]
Only two schools in the city, namely, Mapandi and Nanapun Elementary Schools, have started the one-month pilot limited face-to-face (F2F) classes which is set to end on March 21.
After the pilot F2F, the City Schools Division of Marawi together with the Bangsamoro government's Ministry of Basic, Higher, and Technical Education will conduct an evaluation and assessment for possible expansion of the limited physical classes.
The city health officer also encouraged parents to submit their kids to Covid-19 vaccination to protect them against the coronavirus and to reach community protection.
Fully vaccinated individuals in the city are only at 24% of its target eligible population which according to Dalidig is still far away from herd immunity. (APB/PIA Lanao del Sur)
