MARAWI CITY (PIA)--In its aim to reduce the vulnerability of communities to natural and manmade hazards, the Islamic Relief Philippines in partnership with Kalimudan Foundation Inc. handed over an early warning device to six villages in Ditsaan-Ramain town in Lanao del Sur.
The early warning device was provided under the disaster risk reduction (DRR) component of the Sustaining Transformative and Resilient Initiatives in Vulnerable Communities (STRIVEC) in Ranao Philippines project funded by Islamic Relief Canada.
Sittie Jamairah Disomimba, Islamic Relief Philippines Area Programme Manager, said STRIVEC is a three-year project that aims to enable the target municipality to improve its DRR initiatives.
"Through the Task Force Bangon Marawi, we identified the municipality of Ditsaan-Ramain because this is one of the municipalities wherein a lot of displaced families from Marawi sought refuge," she said.
According to her, the six barangays were identified in coordination with the local government through its Municipal Planning and Development Office and Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office as well as the Raheemah Peace Weavers being the partner people's organization.
The recipient barangays are Linamon, Barimbingan, Buadi Alao, Bagoaingud, Lumbatan, and Maindig. All received a solar power system.
Disomimba said the assistance was based on the results of workshops wherein the barangays themselves specified the early warning device that they need the most.
"Napakasimple lang ito na gamit but if you look at the impact of this assistance it's really important given na walang ilaw [this is a very simple thing but if you look at the impact of this assistance it's really important given that there's no electricity]," Disomimba said.
Jasmin Domado, barangay chairwoman of Lumbatan, conveyed her gratitude to the humanitarian organization and its partners for the assistance they received.
"On behalf of the six pioneering barangays, I would like to thank Islamic Relief and Kalimudan Foundation Inc. Salamat sa binigay ninyo sa amin at sana hindi ito ang [Thank you for the assistance you gave to us and hopefully, this won’t be the] last. We are praying na mayroon pang [that there are] more projects to come," she said.
Domado further said the solar power system is very useful for them as most of the time, especially during flooding, they experience a power outage. (APB/PIA Lanao del Sur)
