Artisan sector stimulates cultural, economic dev't

MARAWI CITY, Lanao del Sur (PIA)--A lawmaker in Lanao del Sur province underscored the need to invest in harnessing the skills of Meranaw artisans to boost the province's cultural and economic development.

"This is the empowerment we need. We don't need to venture into new things, instead, let us invest in what we already have," said Board Member Ansary “Ringo” Usman Gandamra during the opening program of the 1st Meranaw Artisans Summit held at the provincial capitol gym Tuesday, Sept, 27.

Gandamra said the works of local artisans not only showcase the Meranaw culture but also serve as an instrument to change how others perceive Meranaws.

"With this, we can show to the community that we, Meranaws, have the skills and the unlimited potential to contribute not just culturally but economically," he further said.

The board member also emphasized that they must not take for granted the artisans' work, especially at the height of technology and Westernization.

"We must double efforts not just to keep our Meranaw culture from being forgotten but also thrive on how to reach its full potential," he added.

On the part of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan, Gandamra conveyed their commitment to make ordinances and resolutions that would push forward the welfare of local artisans and promote Meranaw craftsmanship.

The Meranaw Artisan Summit was spearheaded by the Provincial Tourism Office to provide a platform for cross-sector collaboration to advance Meranaw crafts and culture as well as local tourism.

The event was attended by artisans from different municipalities in the province and several organizations helping to promote local artisans' products. (APB/PIA-10 Lanao del Sur)
