MARAWI CITY, Lanao del Sur (PIA)--The Islamic City here has once again showcased its preparedness for disasters as it successfully joined the third quarter nationwide simultaneous earthquake drill Thursday, September 8.
Marawi City Disaster Risk Reduction Management (DRRM) Officer Sittie Rahma Maruhom shared that they held the drill at Al-Khwarizmi International College (AKIC) for Senior High School taking into account its structure and location that would best show how a worst-case scenario should be handled.
She detailed that the school is a four-storey building situated in a tight place with no space that can serve as an evacuation center.
“In the case of AKIC, considering the building and space, kung may earthquake, napakaprone nila [if there is an earthquake, they are really prone]… We want to execute kung paano ang magiging approach nila [what their approach will be] just in case an earthquake happens while the classes are going on,” said Maruhom.
The DRRM officer further stressed that through the drill, they wanted to equip students and teachers on what to do if a disaster or earthquake happens during classes.
“Positive naman ang feedback [The feedback was positive]. We always want to inculcate in the minds of the teachers kung [that] in case of emergencies, sila ang magiging [they will be the] first responders kaya need na maequip sila [that is why they need to be equipped] on what to do during that emergency.”
ccordingly, the event is part of their disaster preparedness which is one of the four areas of DRRM, alongside disaster prevention and mitigation, disaster response, and disaster rehabilitation and recovery.
With the positive outcome of the recent earthquake drill, the CDRRMO bared that they plan to do the same activity to public establishments in the city to expand their goal of preparing them for possible shakes.
Moreover, they shall be going to communities to see whether barangay disaster risk reduction committees are still activated and doing the task of equipping their own people for inevitable disasters.
Meanwhile, apart from Marawi City, the municipality of Saguiaran likewise joined the simultaneous earthquake drill. (CRG/PIA-10/Lanao del Sur)
