Gov’t urges violent extremists to yield, join mainstream

12th CMO Battalion Commanding Officer Lt.Col. Harold Sucayre says everyone has a role to play to bring progress to one place. As such, he urges everyone, especially violent extremists who are still operating under their respective groups, to go hand-in-hand in campaigning for peace instead of violence. PIAGAPO, Lanao del Sur (PIA)--The government continues its appeal to violent extremists who are still operating under their respective groups to submit themselves to the authorities and start their lives anew.

Piagapo Municipal Mayor Ali Sumandar firmly emphasized that violence will never be the answer to whatever they are fighting for.

He stated that if people would employ brutality, the advancement of their place would be far from realization.

“Sana, ipagpatuloy natin ang ating pakikipagsalamuha sa komunidad at ipagpatuloy natin ang kapayapaan na inaasam-asam natin. Hindi solusyon ang pagkakaroon ng violence tulad ng Marawi siege. Ang solusyon ay ang pagkakaroon ng walang hanggang kapayapaan nang sa ganoon ay makamit natin ang progreso at pag-unlad ng isang bayan,” said Sumandar.

[Hopefully, we will continue our interaction with the community and we will continue the peace we long for. Having violence like the Marawi siege is not a solution. The solution is to have eternal peace so that we can achieve the progress and development of a nation.]

The mayor hoped that his fellow townsmen would instead campaign for peace and order.

12th CMO Battalion Commanding Officer Lt.Col. Harold Sucayre, on the other hand, conveyed that people should rather help each other to bring the island of Mindanao to prosperity.

He underscored that each citizen bears a significant role in alleviating their localities from a negative picture to a positive one.

“Huwag mong sabihin na wala kang magagawa kasi mayroon kang magagawa bilang indibidwal sa isang komunidad. Lahat tayo inaasahan ng buong komunidad para magkaroon ng kasaganahan at kapayapaan sa isang barrio, lungsod at bansa,” said Sucayre.

[Do not say that you can do nothing because you can do something as an individual of a community. We are all being looked up to by the whole community so that a village, city and country will have bounty and peace.]

For her part, Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity (OPAPRU) Social Healing and Peacebuilding Department Director Vanessa Pallarco shared their greater call for the continuous promotion of the culture of peace.

She said they will be needing a strong support system composed of the local government units, government and non-government organizations, the returnees, and their families and communities where they belong.

“We wish to emphasize the component of healing and reconciliation - how are we going to mend the torn social fabrics and broken relationships,” she said. (CRG/PIA-10/Lanao del Sur)
